The practices

Fill the tank, one drop at a time.

Compassion isn't a personality. It's a practice — and like any practice it starts laughably small. Pick one. Try it today. Watch what happens to the room.

A drop

Tiny

30 seconds. Almost free.

  • Make eye contact and say hello to someone serving you.
  • Send a 'thinking of you' text — no agenda.
  • Let the car merge. Wave thanks when someone lets you in.
  • Compliment a stranger out loud, specifically.
  • Hold the door an extra second longer.

A cupful

Small

Five minutes. Quietly powerful.

  • Call someone who'd be surprised to hear from you.
  • Write a real thank-you note to a coworker.
  • Pay for the order behind you.
  • Ask a question and listen all the way through.
  • Tell a parent their kid is wonderful.

A full tank

Bigger

An hour, a day, a habit.

  • Volunteer where your hands are useful, not just your wallet.
  • Mentor someone two years behind you.
  • Cook a meal for a neighbor going through it.
  • Start a 'wins of the week' ritual at work.
  • Forgive someone — quietly, in your own heart.
